The last Kamishibai "e-moto"A brief personal history of Genichiro SHIOZAKI (deceased)

He was born in Kutanda, Suzaka City on June 21, 1912 (Meiji 45) . He was the eldest of 10 children. At the age of 17 he moved alone to Tokyo and worked as at a metal wholesale dealer.

He wanted to get out into the world through practical learning and soon became independent. He entered the upcoming kamishibai business recommended to him and fought hard at the streetcorners of Fukagawa, Kanda, and Waseda to flourish it.

In 1939 (Showa 14), he moved to Nishinari Ward, Osaka, where he started his career as a full-fledged kamishibai performer and founded in 1947 (Showa 22) the organisation "Sanyukai", which produced and distributed kamishibai. Later, it developed into an "e-moto" distributing kamishibai nationwide.

The work of an e-moto is to plan the kamishibai, to hire the artists (to draw the original pictures) and also the authors (to write the texts) and to rent the finished kamishibai to the performers.

Many gifted painters gathered under Mr. Shiozaki, including Shichima SAKAI, who co-authored the full-length comic "Shin-Takarajima"with Osamu TEZUKA, and Kyuho ODERA, the author of "Son Goku" which is considered as one of the collection's

masterpieces.

In 1995 (Heisei 7), Mr. SHIOZAKI renovated his home and opened the "Shiozaki Nostalgic Kamishibai Museum" where the street kamishibai that once caught the thechildren's hearts in every town and village in Japan still lives on.

Mr. SHIOZAKI died on May 25, 2000 (Heisei 12) at the age of 87.
