First popular picture-story kamishibai: Golden Bat

"Golden Bat" was the first street kamishibai in form of a picture story and became instantly popular. Jiro TANAKA and Tokizo GOTO, two kamishibai tellers, made up a story of a phantom thief with a white skeleton mask and a black cloak called "Black Bat" that became famous. To defeat him, there came the friend of justice, "Golden Bat", with a golden skeleton and a red cloak. That was in 1930 (5th year of Showa era) .

At that time, more than 100 children stood in front of the kamishibai and those in the back climbed a tree to have a better look. That shows how overwhelming popular kamishibai was.
